PCSwizz PC Tip of the Day: Spyware Removal

May 19, 2008

Spyware is one of the #1 causes of computer slowdowns, so get rid of it! Spyware is software that is installed onto your PC without your knowledge and runs in the background and takes partial control over your computer. This is why it must not only be removed, but prevented from being installed in the first place.

Microsoft included Windows Defender for free in Windows Vista. To run Windows Defender, do the following:

1. Click Start>All Programs>Windows Defender

2. Once the Windows Defender window pops up, click “Scan” at the top.

3. You are on your way to becoming spyware free!

With a PCSwizz Analysis Consultation, we can look at your PC for free to see how bad your spyware problem is and recommend even stronger solutions. Visit www.pcswizz.com for PC assistance!

PCSwizz Tip of the Day: Browsers

May 16, 2008

Are you looking for a change from Microsoft’s Internet Explorer? Well you have choices when it comes to which browser you use to visit websites.

Two popular browsers are Mozilla’s Firefox (www.firefox.com) and Opera (www.opera.com).

Internet Explorer is the most popular browser right now, which means it’s also the most hacked browser, meaning it’s more vulnerable for security breaches. Firefox and Opera, although not technically more secure than IE, aren’t as popular so therefore aren’t hacked as often, which makes them more secure.

So give them a shot if you are tired of Internet Explorer.

PCSwizz PC Tip of the Day: Surge Protection

May 15, 2008

It is vital that you plug your PC equipment into a surge protector. Your computer’s electrical components and become damaged even by static electricity(you know when you walk across carpet and touch someone..ouch!), so you can imagine what a lightning strike can cause.

A surge can happen in these ways:

1) Lightning strikes an electrical pole, sending a “surge” of power into your home.

2) After a power outage, once the power comes back on, the initial “surge” of energy rushes into your computer and fries it.

So make sure you purchase a surge protector with enough “joules” to handle a decent surge. Joules are simply a rating of each power strip sold today. The more joules a protector has, the more extra power it can absorb.

Hope this Tip of the Day helped!
